Visceral Manipulation Therapy in Tucson, AZ

Experience the transformative benefits of Visceral Manipulation (VM) therapy, a gentle and effective approach to improving your overall health and well-being.

What is Visceral Manipulation Therapy?

Visceral Manipulation (VM) is a specialized manual therapy that focuses on the internal organs, or viscera, such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines. Developed by French osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral, VM is based on the principle that healthy movement of the organs is essential for overall health. By gently manipulating the viscera, practitioners can help restore normal mobility, tone, and motion to the organs and their connective tissues, improving their function and relieving pain and dysfunction.

VM does not focus solely on the site of pain or dysfunction, but evaluates the entire body to find the source of the problem. Fascia (connective tissue) is a continuous web that spreads throughout the entire body, much like a spider's web. When we sustain injuries, have musculo-skeletal pains, surgeries, scars, and postural imbalances, the altered 'pull' on this continual web can affect the normal physiological movement of our internal organs — which can impair the organs' function and lead to referred pain patterns.

Visceral Manipulation Therapy Techniques

Organ-Specific Mobilization

This technique focuses on gently mobilizing specific organs to improve their function and relieve tension in the surrounding tissues.

Fascial Release

Fascial release involves manipulating the connective tissue to reduce restrictions and enhance the mobility of the organs.

Neural Pathway Stimulation

By stimulating neural pathways, this technique helps to restore proper communication between the organs and the nervous system.

Visceral Manipulation assists functional and structural imbalances throughout the body including musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic dysfunction. It evaluates and treats the dynamics of motion and suspension in relation to organs, membranes, fascia and ligaments. Visceral Manipulation increases proprioceptive communication within the body, thereby revitalizing a person and relieving symptoms of pain, dysfunction, and poor posture.

Thanks to the dedicated work of Jean-Pierre Barral, a Physiotherapist (RPT) and Osteopath (DO), healthcare practitioners today can use the rhythmic motions of the visceral system as important therapeutic tools. Harmony and health exist when motion is free and excursion is full — when motion is not labored, overexcited, depressed, or conflicting with neighboring structures and their mobility. Due to the delicate and often highly reactive nature of the visceral tissues, gentle force precisely directed reaps the greatest results.

A Specialized Extension of Visceral Work

Visceral Vascular Manipulation, Upper Body

Arteries are not rigid tubing. They move, they widen and narrow as the body's demands change, and they sit inside soft tissue that can lose its glide after injury, surgery, or years of postural strain. Visceral Vascular Manipulation brings the same gentle, listening touch used throughout Visceral Manipulation to the vessels themselves and to the tissues that surround and suspend them.

In the upper body that means the heart and its attachments, the aorta as it arches through the chest, and the subclavian and brachial arteries as they pass beneath the collarbone and travel down the arm. A restriction anywhere along that route can quietly limit blood flow and refer symptoms well away from its source, most often into the shoulder, forearm, and hand.

Because circulation feeds every tissue it reaches, releasing a vascular restriction can change how the surrounding structures work, not only how they feel. The work stays slow and specific throughout — the aim is to restore movement where it has been lost, never to force it.
